New P-51D Mustang 60 - 66" Nitro Fuel Powered led RC Warbird Airplane ARF RC Remote Control RadioRich TJanuary 18, 2011Nice looking and flying P 51, especially considering the cost. I did take a few preventative measures and made some changes before flying. 1. The gear mount plate wasn't well glued. I added triangular stock reinforcing where I could reach.. 2. I ran a bead of CA everywhere I could inside the fuselage. 3. I reinforced the firewall with tri-stock. 4. I replaced the iffy tail wheel bracket with a Sullivan. 5. I mounted the elevator & rudder servos inside. An easy mod. Looks better that way. 6. I side mounted the engine (OS 61FX) and used a pitts muffler. 7. I tossed the molded plastic wheel wells and made deeper and wider ones out of balsa and card stock. 8. The plane wanted to nose over so I added 1/16" shims under the rear of the retracts. 9. The CG called for seemed too far back. I set it at 5" The plane is groovy, flies like a pattern plane. Wheel landings are easy but a little fast as it doesn't like to slow down, with a fast flat glide. The retracts are marginal and have had a tendency to bind. They're 90 degree so the gear looks splayed out on the ground, but they're holding up ok so far. Worth the money!
