USAF Super Falcon 120 - 63" Nitro Powered Radio Controlled Jet ARFfhhuberApril 22, 2011Not quite the normal EDF install. BVM EVF 5612 (Neu custom motor for BVM and Castle ESC assembled to fan by BVM) 12S 5000 mah LiPo Spring Air retracts. JR X9303 JR921 RX using all 9 channels. Hitec 5485HB digital servos. I found that the model weighs too much for 5/32 steel retract struts. I replaced the music wire with titanium struts from Central Hobbies. I read that these models need significant down-thrust with a typical 120 mm (5 inch) EDF install. I built a mount that raised the fan. Top of my fan motor is even with the bottom of the horizontal stab. I installed the fan at appx 1.5 deg down-thrust and find that it tucks the nose a little as I add power. I think I can go to 0 deg. You can't raise a turbine like this because it would burn the horizontal stab. Very smooth flying model. Fast roll rate but the design is not meant for tight loops. I use a small amount of elevon mix (ailerons go up with up elevator) to improve low speed stability for landings. This makes it much less likely to drop a wingtip in a stall. It doesn't take much. I think the 13 inch CG location may be a LITTLE back from ideal. It seems to droop the tail as it slows down with power off, hands-off. Flaps down cures this. *************** If going nitro power I recommend a bladder inserted tank and a sintered filter-clunk. I had to do this with a Bobcat 50 to cure issues with the stock tank having the clunk come out of the fuel during long climbs. The bladder insert has muffler pressure outside the bladder so no air bubbles get to the engine. The sintered clunk prevents the bladder from plugging the fuel pickup.
